Tribe warns fighters participating in unsanctioned MMA fight

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has issued a warning to Mixed Martial Arts fighters who may be planning to compete in an upcoming MMA fight in Akwesasne. According to the tribe, an MMA event to be held October 17, 2009 at the All Inn Lounge is not sanctioned by their Department of Athletic Regulation and any fighters or promoters participating in it risk being banned from sanctioned events in Akwesasne.

“Any promoters or fighters who participate in non-sanctioned events in Akwesasne will be ineligible to take part in future SRMT DAR-sanctioned events,” the tribe said. “The Mohegan Tribe’s Department of Athletic Regulation supports the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s decision and will not allow any of the fighters or promoters to participate in future events sanctioned by them.”

According to the tribe, the All Inn Lounge received a license suspension in 2008 for allegedly violating terms of the tribe’s Alcohol Beverage Control Act. All Inn has never regained status as a tribally licensed business.

Details of the upcoming MMA event were not available. However, the tribe warned fighters and promoters that they are unable to ensure anyone’s safety at an unauthorized event.

“The DAR has worked very hard to establish rules and regulations for the sport to ensure the safety of the fighters, provide guidance to promoters and allow the sport to grow responsibly, said SRMT Compliance Director Elliot Lazore. “Non-sanctioned fights put the fighters, investors, promoters and the integrity of the sport in jeopardy.”

The tribe further stated that they do not assume any responsibility or liability for any accidents or incidents that occur at the event.

Organizers for the MMA fight were not immediately available for comment.
