A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Cornwall Kinsmen travelling team (U19) won gold at the Provincial women’s Softball Championships in Newmarket last weekend.
Cornwall played extremely well against teams they had never seen before, including the Seabringville (Hunters), Seabringville (Miller), Georgian Bay, Flamboro and Scarborough(East).
Cornwall opened against the Seabringville (Hunters), winning 8-0. Krista Oakes struck out 17 against Scarborough (East) The Selects trailed by 5 runs in the sixth inning but came back to win 16-6. The mercy rule came into play against Flamboro, Cornwall winning 13-0. Sunnie Francis had a home run in the game.
In the playoffs, Cornwall met Georgian Bay and won 16-5. Onto the Championship game Seabringville(Miller), Cornwall won 3-0. Seabringville could not muster a run as Krista Oakes’ pitching was too much. She struck out 13 in guiding her team to the championship.
Cornwall received outstanding defense and fantastic pitching from Alicia Thomas and Krista Oakes. Oakes struck out 67 in 31 innings work in the tourney.
