A Voice from the Eastern Door
AKWESASNE, NY -- The Action Race Parts Pro Stocks will take center stage this Friday evening, August 21st at Mohawk International Raceway (MIR), as Bear’s Den, Eastern Door, Western Door and Jen Tobacco present a full card of racing featuring the Mohawk Race Parts Pro Stock tour, with a 40-lap main event to highlight the racing card. Also joining the racing program on Friday night will be the Frenchie’s Chevrolet DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, the SUNY Canton Street Stocks and the Bandits, with racing set to start at 7:45 PM.
The Pro Stock division is known for its tough competition and thrilling two- and three-wide racing action--with additional prize money and Mohawk Series points on the line, a large field of invaders from Canada and even a few downstate Pro Stock veterans are expected to enter the event. Louie Jackson has set the pace for most of the season with four wins at MIR, while Jody Swamp, Harvey Arquette Jr., and Joey Ladouceur each have a single win and Pete Stefanski won the Mr. DIRT Pro Stock tour event in July.
While only five different drivers have entered victory lane so far this season, the list of local drivers who have come close is quite long: Dave Bissonnette, Corey Wheeler, Dion Oakes, Dave Papineau, Rod Tarbell, Roch Aubin, Ricky Thompson, Billy Woodward Jr. and Travis Back have all been near the front on several occasions and are expected to be in the hunt when the green flag drops on Friday night.
Friday night’s race will be the fourth race in the series: Pete Stefanski won the opening round on June 13th at Autodrome Drummond, while Joey Ladouceur has swept the last two races at Autodrome Edelweiss and Cornwall Motor Speedway (he was also runner-up at Drummond). Friday night’s Mohawk International Raceway race is the only American stop for the regional series, while the series finale is set for Sunday, September 6th at Cornwall Motor Speedway.
In addition to the Pro Stock special event, the Frenchie’s Chevrolet 358 Modifieds are expected to put on another thrilling show. Carey Terrance is coming off back-to-back wins in the Modifieds, but the recent addition of Modified stars Joel Doiron, Gage Morin and Laurent Ladouceur has enhanced an already strong field of cars. In addition to Terrance, Roy Tarbell has scored two wins, while Brian McDonald has scored a single win. Perry Francis is coming off another great run with a third-place finish last Friday night, while Todd Stewart scored another impressive top-five finish. John Lazore, Mitch Jock, Mark Smoke, Dave Heaslip, and Brad Shova are just a few of the MIR regulars who have been fast but still find themselves searching for the first win of the season.
The SUNY Canton Street Stocks have had a few familiar names dominating the victory list, with Mike White (three wins), Preston Forbes and Mike Allen (two wins each) keeping out all other challengers, but Preston Mossow has been coming on strong the past couple of weeks, while Mike Benedict’s return to the division after an early season rollover means that there will be no shortage of competition in Friday night’s feature.
The Bandits continue an outstanding season that has seen a large number of racers score wins--Scott Mere, Joey Foster, Nolan Swamp and Eli Gilbert have each entered victory lane twice, while Justin White, Henry Lamica, Gary Sharlow, Scott Kocher and Tammy Rogers have all proven that they are fast enough to win and yet the checkered flag still eludes them as the season is rushing to a close.
