A Voice from the Eastern Door
In one of the liveliest concerts to ever come to Akwesasne, country star and famous father Billy Ray Cyrus took the stage at Jacobs Manufacturing in Frogtown, Akwesasne to crowd of about 2,000.
Cyrus first flew to international fame in the early 1990s with his hit “Achy Breaky Heart.” After falling off the radar for several years he came back into spotlight with an acting role as Robbie Ray on the Disney show Hannah Montana, where his real life daughter Miley Cyrus plays his on screen daughter.
Sunday’s concert was a mixture of country bumpkins and teeny boppers all excited to see the star perform.
Backstage Cyrus stepped out of an SUV with a new Hollywood look to him. With highlighted hair and sunglasses, he has come a long way from the famous mullet of the 1990s.
Many people who had earned or won meet & greet passes were able to pose for a quick photo with Cyrus before he took the stage.
Kahnawa:ke band Souled opened up for the country star, followed by dance performances from Rakit City Dancers. They performed Hannah Montana’s Hoe Down Show Down.
Immediately following their performance, four traditional Akwesasne dancers also stepped up to the stage to perform for the crowd. Keegan Thomas, Sasta Thomas, Kiannah Thomas and Bailey Thomas wore their traditional regalia as they performed.
Keegan and Sasta also joined Cyrus onstage for two songs later in the evening, and Cyrus said he thought they were great.
Cyrus proved to be an entertaining performer and he was happy to have a large crowd of Hannah Montana fans screaming right at the gate before the stage. Throughout the show he tossed them towels and clothing and at one point even stopped to sign a few autographs.
The singer performed his classic tunes like “Achy Breaky Heart” and “Some Gave All” as well as some tunes from his new Christian album. His style is a mixture of country and rock.
Although there was no cameo from Miley Cyrus, the crowd was still enthusiastic about the concert, dancing and cheering until the end.
Following the concert, Jacobs Manufacturing put on a fireworks show that could be heard from five miles away.
