A Voice from the Eastern Door

AMBE students honored with bursaries

A select number of Mohawk students who graduated this June from Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School were honored with bursaries Friday from Enbridge Inc. and the Bank of Montreal.

Every year the two corporations honor Akwesasne graduates to show their support for the Akwesasne community and education of young Mohawks.

All ten students who received the bursaries are going to pursue a secondary education.

Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education Director Barry Montour reminded the teenagers that leaving home was going to be difficult but staying gone is harder.

“We’re not a very mobile people,” he said.

He encouraged the students to stick it out at university and college, and then come home with the knowledge and skills.

Mohawk Council of Akwesasne CAO Sheree Bonaparte also spoke and gave students words of motivation and encouragement.

The recipients of the Enbridge bursaries were Preston Francis-Mitchell, Kristy LaFrance, Amber Lazore, Melanie Roundpoint, and Kaylynn Thompson. Recipients of the BMO bursaries were Delaney Delormier, William Ross LaFrance, Chelsea Lazore, Amanda Mitchell and Kylie Thompson.
