MCA to hold election Saturday

Residents of Akwesasne’s northern portion will head to the polls this Saturday to vote in the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s general election, which is held every three years for all 13 council positions.

Grand Chief Timothy Thompson, who is finishing up his first term as grand chief, faces opposition from Mike Mitchell, a politically experienced Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) resident and from businessman Ronald “Minnows” Sunday of the Tsi Snaihne (Snye) district. Thompson resides in the Kana:takon (St. Regis) district.

All 12 district chiefs are also seeking re-election. In the district of Kawehno:ke Cheryl Jacobs, Nona Benedict, Wesley Benedict and Abram Benedict are up for re-election and other nominees are Kateri Benedict, Lloyd Benedict, Dennis Chaussi, Gary Cole, Brian David, Antoine Delormier JR., Thomas Francis, Elaine Lazore, Laura Morris and Robert White.

In the district of Kana:takon incumbents Julie Phillips Jacobs, Connie Hall, Florence Phillips and Larry King seek re-election and additional nominees are Crystal Bay, Johanne Jackson, Amanda Jacobs, Danielle Oakes, Rachel Roundpoint, Diane Sawatis and Ronald Thompson.

In the Tsi Snaihne district, Morris John Adams, Joseph Lazore, Louis Lazore, and William Sunday are seeking re-election with opposition from fellow nominees Theresa Cole, Darlene Cook, Katherine Cook, Michael Thomas Francis, Jr., Leonard Lazore, Andrea Lazore-Phillips, Karen Loran, Charlene Sunday and Theresa Thompson.

Voting will take place at the Tri-District Elders Lodge on Kawehno:ke, the St. Regis Recreation in Kana:takon and the Snye Recreation in Tsi Snaihne.

Voting will take place from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
