Kana:takon School students celebrate end of school-year with prom

The St. Regis Recreation has sponsored and organized a prom for the past few years for 7th and 8th graders of Kana:takon School. While the recreation has hosted the prom in their building several times, this year the committee and recreation staff held the event right in the school gymnasium.

Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Kana:takon District Chiefs Florence Phillips and Julie Phillips Jacobs assisted the recreation committee in organizing the vent which gave the students a fun activity to take part in before school let out for the summer.

While most of the girls took advantage of the excuse to wear dresses and shoes, many of the boys opted for comfort in their sneakers and t-shirts.

Still, dozens of children showed up to the free event and had their photos taken, snacked on fruit and veggies, danced to the Electric Slide, and visited with one another.

Aaron Terrance provided DJ services for the students.

At the end of the event a prom king and queen (8th grade) and prince and princess (7th grade) were crowned by selecting names at random. The queen and king were Taylor Square and Jerome Cook. The Princess and Prince were Mary Jacobs and Jade Martin.

Thanks to all those who helped with the event.
