A Voice from the Eastern Door
AKWESASNE, NY -- Mohawk International Raceway (MIR) management has moved the 2009 season opener back one week to Friday, May 29th so that work crews can complete the extensive track renovations that have been underway throughout the off-season.
“Our work crews have been pressing hard to get everything ready. We were close, but there are still a few things we must complete before MIR opens for the season,” said MIR Operations Manager Elliott Lazore. “We’re pushing back opening night by one week to make sure everything is ready to go. We want to make sure everyone can enjoy how much has changed at the track from the very first night of racing.”
Right now, work crews are focusing on completing new VIP towers, completing all electrical work, and putting the track’s exterior fencing into place. The new grandstands are already up, as are the new Musco stadium lights. The new frontstretch concrete retaining wall, the track lounge/clubhouse building, and elevating the pit area for better drainage were completed earlier this spring. The food concession vendors will be moving their buildings onto the grounds in preparation for opening night.
While MIR management regrets losing a scheduled show, Lazore promises the race teams and fans that the extra week will be worth the wait. “What an opener we’ll have: Frenchie’s Chevrolet is going to be presenting the annual running of the Memorial Cup for the 358 Modifieds. This is normally the ‘big Spring race’ for everyone and it’s going to kick off the Frenchie’s Chevrolet American Revolution series for the Mods.”
This year’s running of the Frenchie’s Chevrolet Memorial Cup race will feature a 35-lap main event for the 358 Modifieds, in addition to a full racing program for the Pro Stocks, Street Stocks and Bandits. Racing gets underway at 7:45 PM.
After the opening night events, racing will continue at MIR every Friday night throughout the summer. The second leg of the Frenchie’s Chevrolet American Revolution series will be run on Friday July 3rd, with the series wrapping up on Friday Sept. 4th, when all of MIR’s 2009 track champions will be determined. All three races in the series will be 35-lap events. The high point driver at the end of the American Revolution series will bring home a $1,000 bonus courtesy of Frenchie’s Chevrolet in Massena, NY.
Mohawk International Raceway is located in Akwesasne, NY, one mile east of the International Bridge to Cornwall, ONT. From Route 37, turn south onto Frogtown Road. Racing is held on Friday nights from May through September, featuring DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and Pro Stocks, Street Stocks and Bandits.
