A Voice from the Eastern Door
Basic Information:
Bobby Ciralli, grandson ofAkwesasne resident Mrs. Helen Cole, recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Bobby, a 10”’ grader at the Wooster School in Danbury. CT. is a 16-year-old Boy Scout with Patterson Troop 440 in Patterson, NY. Bobby currently resides with his parents, JoAnne (formerly ofAkwesasne) and Robert Ciralli Jr. in Carmel, NY. The official Eagle Scout Court of Honor award ceremony was on April 25, 2009.
Scout Career:
Bobby started his scouting career as a Cub Scout in 2000 at age 7. In 2004, he graduated from Cub Scouts and joined Patterson Troop 440. He progressed steadily from the Tenderfoot rank through the subsequent ranks of Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life Scout. Bobby completed multiple requirements in the areas of personal/troop leadership and management, outdoor survival skills, emergency preparedness, and life skills. He also completed 36 merit badges including the 12 required to attain Eagle Scout.
Eagle Scout Service Project:
As part of the requirements for Eagle Scout, Bobby organized and completed a service project benefiting his previous elementary/middle school, The Melrose School in Brewster, NY. The project consisted of improving at no cost the school’s woodland access trail (named the Red Knights Trail) from its upper level academic buildings/grounds to the lower level athletic fields. The 254-foot trail was in disrepair from erosion and forest overgrowth and was problematic for the students and faculty to navigate. Rehabilitation of the path, if done by a professional landscaping firm, would have cost the small school an estimated $20,000.
Bobby coordinated professional resources to review the trail and advise regarding the repairs.
Subsequently, he developed a detailed, written project plan that organized resources as well established interim goals and a timetable for implementing the repairs. The project required Bobby to present this plan first to the school then to the troop, and finally to the BSA for approval. Upon approval, Bobby had to organize fundraising activities (an ice cream social) to pay for the landscaping materials; purchase the materials; and manage, schedule and lead teams to perform the actual work according to the established project deadlines and goals. The project was successfully completed in November 2008. As part of the Eagle Scout requirements, Bobby documented the entire project in a 101-page report for presentation at the Eagle Scout Board of Review (the final hurdle to attaining Eagle Scout.)
