AMBE staff participate in Big Bike for Heart and Stroke

The Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) administration and school personnel participated in the Big Bike for Heart and Stroke on April 24, 2009 in the district of Kana:takon. A challenge was put forth to all schools to form teams to ride the bike. There was also AMBE Board members and staff from Mohawk Council of Akwesasne programs who participated.

Together, a total $6,901.19 was raised. Last year, a total of $3,724.55 was raised with only two teams riding the bike. Administration staff raised $2,495.95, Kana:takon School raised $1,777.50, Tsi Snaihne School raised $1,349.74 and the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School raised $1,278.00. The person who raised the most on each team had the pleasure of riding the big seat on the bike and relaxing during the ride around the village.

AMBE administration has been participating in the Big Bike for the past four years. There was once a threat that this would no longer be offered in Akwesasne due to many issues. It is hoped that this event will regain its popularity and continue to grow in the community. The money raised will go toward the Heart and Stroke Foundation and will help reduce the devastating effects of these diseases!

Niawen goes out to the Captains of each team who coordinated teams within the school. As well, Niawen to all those who participated in this worthy event and especially to Marilyn Sharrow who raised the most funds! She raised around $900.
