The hockey team of 2000-01 was nominated by Norman Treptow and had proved to be one of the highest ranking Salmon River Teams in the Nation (4th). This team is very deserving of this recognition and to be honored at the third SRC Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for 2009.
The winter ice hockey season for the Shamrocks was very impressive as they cleared win after win and displayed the talents and strength of this year’s powerhouse. After handing the top ranked Division 1 Irondequoit their first loss of the season, the SRC squad held their heads high and polished their own record to 15-0-2. Just prior to the Section 10 Division 2 Hockey Championship game at Cheel Arena, the Sr. boys had a record of 24-2. After winning the Division 2 play-offs at Cheel against St. Lawrence Larries, Phil Boots was named the league’s” most valuable player of the year.” The SR’s semi final victory over Whitesboro 8-3, took SR to Utica. During the NY State Play offs, Phil would reach another milestone when he earned his 100th point win during the game against Aquinas at the championship game in the Utica Auditorium.
This team was also honored to be one of 50 schools in NY State to receive the NY Good Sports Programs Award from the NY State Public High School Athletic Association. This SR hockey really displayed a high degree of sportsmanship. Another noteworthy fact is that this outstanding SRC team had gained their fifth win unmatched at the NYS Championship. As a result, Bill Plante received the” Coach of the Year” award for bringing SR teams for 4 of these championship titles.
From the final game, the All Tournament Team included Andy Gardner, Bill Black, Phil Boots and Ted Cook. Also for the NAC Division 2 league the WMSA award went to Aaron Swamp for goal tending.
This team is quite worthy of being selected into the 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame on May 16th.
