A Voice from the Eastern Door
It turns out the weather was a perfect sunny day, just a hint of April breeze on the 9th of April, 2009. J.O.C. (Corey Jocko), our own Akwesasne rapper, and friends performed their concert to several hundred young audience members at the Akwesasne Mohawk School, including the students from Kanatakon, grades 4-8, from 10-11:30 in the morning hours at school.
Magoo Cook, dance Instructor at Magoo’s Dance Co. and two of his students, daughters of rappers performing with J.O.C., entertained the young crowd with their routine. Magoo, a long time entertainer himself knows what it is like to be a new artist, was at the concert to give J.O.C. some support.
A second showing in the afternoon by J.O.C. and his back-up singers, were for the Thunder Hawks-Super Stars, Outstanding character, were rewarded for their achievements. These Kids must excel and meet qualifying criteria from each school term.
J.O.C. opened in the midst of a speech followed by his rap music; Juxtaposed throuought the morning concert. Blended messages of hope, never surrender, never give up (also the title of one of his songs) and go for your goals. J.O.C. says goals are more attainable then dreams.
The students were surely hyped up and showed broad smiles on their faces that they were having a great time. It couldn’t have happened at a better time, end-of school-year. Mrs. Seymour, Principal of AMS, says she noticed the students were motivated and had a positive attitude. During these difficult times, the Lil” Hearts of Akwesasne would have loved nothing more than to be entertained by this group of rap-singers that they identified into their music. J.O.C.’s vision to be a success in his passion rap-music and use some of his profits to generate back to the youth of Akwesasne. His other interest is in designing clothes.
List of the other rap singers in the group: Young Moses/Harley David, producer/beats & raps, Akwesasne; Rye Vicious/Davey Bedard, singer, Cornwall; Hollywood/Davey’s wife, singer; Preacherman/Shawn Primeau, singer, Cornwall; Letter J./Jason Mitchell, singer, Cornwall.
Niawen to Mrs. Marie Seymour who deserves applause for permitting J.O.C. and group rappers to perform at the school. Great entertaining and don’t forget to call CKON Radio to request songs by this group. My favorite is ‘I Know U Know’.
Also, APTN was at the school taping this concert. Watch their station for a listing of when it will appear.
