A Voice from the Eastern Door
The SRC athlete students of the months of January and February are being announced. The students chosen are presented by a certificate from the Salmon River Athletic Hall of Fame and the Akwesasne Jreck Sub. Each month, a male and female athlete is selected by their coach. They will pose with a member of the Hall of Fame and their picture will be displayed on the walls of the High School lobby. Their stories will also appear in local newspapers, Indian Time and Malone Telegram.
The first athlete selection is Demetri LaFrance, a Junior, and team player for the Varsity Boys Basketball Team. He was chosen by his coach Joe Binion. During the month of February, Demetri solidified himself as the team leader. Being given the title of captain, he was abe to help lead the team to two key victories over St. Lawrence Central and St. Regis Falls. He averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in the two games combined. Throughout the month, Demetri saw his role on the team when players went down due to injury and sickness. Demetri took on his role without hesitation, doing what was most important to the team.
The female athlete for January was Brittany (Washonti:io) Jacobs for her role as a Varsity Basketball player at Salmon River.
Brittany is a senior captain of the team who has demonstrated excellent leadership skills and dedication to her team. She is the kind of leader who demonstrated all the attributes of a great team player. She attended practices regularly with a positive attitude and always worked to the best of her ability, she pushed herself to do her best. Brittany defined her role on the team as someone who chose to place the best interest of the team ahead of her own personal interests. She demonstrated respect toward her coaches at all times and was able to take instruction well. Brittany offered encouragement to her teammates on and off the court. She became known as firing up the three pointers and starting the games off with a quick three point basket to get the team rolling. Her infectious positive attitude and well defined team commitment are the attributes that any coach appreciates in a team player.

The male athlete for the month of February is Ty Thompson, chosen by his coach Tim Cook. Ty had been given the role of captain for the 2008 - 09 for many reasons. He was able to handle any kind of situational plays. He lead the boy’s varsity team in points in both league and over all play during the regular season; (league 10 goals, 16 assists, 26 points ------- overall 14 goals, 19 assists, 33 points)
Ty was a Section 10 2nd Team All Northern one year ago. On January 16, 2009, Ty scored both goals in a 2-5 loss at #1 state ranked New Hartford. On February 25, 2009, Ty was on the ice for all 3 goals for the Shamrocks while collecting 2 assists in a 3-2 overtime win in the section X Division II Semi-final. He is incredibly consistent and typically finds the scoresheet in most games.
