A Voice from the Eastern Door
Author: Jodi Picoult
Yet again I am left completely satisfied as well as amazed by Jodi Picoult and her ability to tell stories. Picoult and her attention to detail, her vast knowledge of everything that makes it to her keyboard, leave all who read her novels marveling at her talent. This book among all the others is yet another exhibit of proof of her excellent work.
Ellie Hathaway has become one of the top defense attorneys at her firm. She succeeds in getting the bad guys acquitted for murder, pedophilia, and fraud. Ellie never would have thought she would be defending one of the non-violent and good natured Amish people. She also never thought she’d be defending an 18 year old unmarried Amish girl, Katie Fisher. She is accused of committing first degree murder to a newborn baby by leaving it to die. Despite the evidence of medical testing, she denies having the baby. Ellie and Katie, two people from totally different cultures, come together to try and defend Katie’s innocence; they both clash and come together in the process of unraveling this case. Ellie’s patience is tested as she struggles to complete this puzzle in order to save Katie. They both look deep into themselves, finding out who they are and how they got to the point they are now. What things might the two discover as their journey continues?
This book will keep you up late at night trying to finish yet trying to prolong ending it for as long as you can. This story of self discovery is one of my favorites. How two cultures, however different, can put aside each other’s differences if it means helping a loved one. Picoult has proved that yet again of her ability to create great stories.
