A Voice from the Eastern Door

Tribal police searching for shooting suspect

On March 11, 2009 at approximately 2:45 AM, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police responded to a call of an armed burglary in progress at a home on Sweet Grass Lane, Akwesasne NY, near River Road.

The home owner reported that when returning home from a week-long trip, he noticed that all the lights were on and the front door was partially opened. After entering the premises, the victim was confronted by an armed intruder who then fired one shot towards him. Fortunately, the bullet missed him, continued through the front door and struck the victim’s car. The victim fled to a neighbor’s house where he phoned police. No injuries were reported during the burglary and all but a few of the stolen items were recovered nearby that same morning by police.

The unknown male intruder escaped before police arrived. He is described as 5’9 to 6’0 feet in height, 180-200 lbs. wearing dark colored clothing, dark skinned complexion and spoke with an accent. He was wearing a black bandana that partially covered his face. Tribal Police are continuing to investigate the incident and request that if anyone has any information regarding the burglary, please call Tribal Police at (518) 358-9200 and ask for Detective Sgt. Matthew Rourke.
