A Voice from the Eastern Door
Kana:takon School students who were uprooted last month will get to move back in to their repaired school next week.
The school’s student population consists of 7th and 8th graders, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and Head Start students. They were all relocated to different schools when a break in the sprinkler system caused massive flooding to the entire school. Several classrooms were destroyed and a team of workers salvaged what they could of the rest of the school.
The 7th and 8th graders took up a temporary home at the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School. Early Years students were transferred to Tsi Snaihne School.
Last Friday, Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education Director Barry Montour announced that the school will reopen immediately following March Break. While the rest of AMBE students return to school on Monday, March 23, Kana:takon School students are being given one extra day to help with the transition.
Kana:takon School students, excluding Early Years students, will return to school on Tuesday, March 24.
“Due to the extensive damage in the Early Years Wing, the Kana:takon School Head Start Program will remain at Tsi Snaihne School until further notice,” Montour said.
