A Voice from the Eastern Door

Book: Such a Pretty Girl

Author: Laura Wiess

The book this week is a young adult book with a very mature theme. It is about a girls struggle to overcome her fear of a man she is supposed to love unconditionally. But circumstances find her unable to forgive and forget such an act.

Meredith and her mother have lived together without her father for three years. For three years she has both ignored and hated him for what he did. Also, because her mother refuses to admit the truth that she is a fool to deny, Meredith resents her mother’s feigned ignorance. Her father killed the little innocent girl that Meredith used to be, because, he’s a child molester. Meredith, now fifteen, is horrified to find that he is being released the following day even when she was told he would be in jail for another 6 years. Meredith had hoped that when he was released, she would be long gone, or that he would at least be uninterested in someone as old as she would be. Unable to get him out of her life by her mother’s forced involvement, she fears that he’ll strike again. She hopes that with the support of her best friend Andy, she can get through this.

This book is both interesting and horrifying. It is written so you are scared when she is and angry when she’s angry. It isn’t written very clearly but the story is well thought out. I recommend to older teens and adults because of the topic. Despite that, it’s a very good book.
