Mrs. Margaret A. Steen, age 81, of Bombay, NY died on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 as a result of an auto accident on County Route 4. She had worked at the Bombay Slipper Factory and later was a rural mail carrier for Bombay, retiring several years ago. She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church parish, where she attended daily Mass and was active in the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was involved with the Bombay board of elections for many years.
Born Aug. 14, 1927, in Bombay, daughter of Ernest and Elizabeth Kirkey Durant, she graduated from Bombay High School. She married Thomas J. Steen on Feb. 1, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Church.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons and two daughters-in-law: James and Joan, Fairport; Stephen, Houston, Texas; and Donald and Nancy, Gumee, Ill., by eight daughters and three sons-in-law: June Singleton, Rochester; Charlotte Steen, Potsdam; Mary Steen, Elkridge, Md.; Eileen and John Trimmer, Elizabeth, Colo.; Theresa Steen, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Kay Vincelette, Knoxville, Tenn.; Margaret and Andrew Sherwood, Woodland Park, Colo; and Eunice and Randy Bauer, Westminster, Colo. She is also survived by two brothers and their wives: Donald and Jean Durant and Hubert and Jean Durant, all of Bombay; by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sister Mary Stephen, OSM, Massena, and June and Clark LaShomb, Raymondville; by 18 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by two daughters; Anne Fishel and Elizabeth Steen, by seven brothers: Bernard, Ralph, Edward, James, Harold, Howard and Lloyd Durant, and by four sisters: Marion Durant, Irene Sanbom, Odena Flynn and Mary Durant.
Calling hours where held at Cappiello-McKenzie & Cosgrove Funeral Home, Fort Covington. A funeral Mass for was held on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Floyd J. Bleaux, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
