A Voice from the Eastern Door
Cornwall, Ontario, January 12,2009- Cornwall Community Hospital announced today that construction will begin on the major Capital Redevelopment Project in January 2009. Pomerleau Construction will begin the work to construct the 95,000 square feet of new space and 78,000 square feet of renovation.
This redevelopment combined with the recent renovations to the Critical Care Unit and Labour and Delivery Suites will transform the Hospital into a state-of-the-art facility. “The brand new clinical space together with equipment upgrades will ensure our future as a top notch provider of hospital services in Eastern Ontario for years to come”, remarked Fernand Hamelin, Board Chairperson.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have approved a capital grant in the amount of $91 million. This is in addition to the $5 million received to complete the Early Works Project. “It is impressive to see the Province, our Municipalities, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Community come together for this project,” says Jeanette Despatie, Chief Executive Officer. “This expansion will position us to meet the future needs of our community and provide for the consolidation of all Hospital services to a newly expanded and renovated McConnell Avenue site.”
Pomerleau Inc., out of Ottawa, will take the lead on the project as the General Contractor. Pomerleau has an excellent record of completing large hospital construction projects. “We are very excited to be awarded the Cornwall Hospital project and we look forward to working with the community over the next five years” said Francis Pomerleau, President.
The total cost of the Redevelopment, including the Early Works, is just over $119 million.
