AMBE to celebrate family literacy day

Tsiothorkó:wa/January 8, 2009 - Akwesasne — In celebration of ABC Family Literacy Day, the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) will be participating in the national attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for Most Children Reading With an Adult, Multiple Locations. The attempt will run across Canada for a 24 hour period between 2 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2009 until 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2009. The current record is 78,791 which was set in the United States. All AMBE schools will be participating. Other programs are also encouraged to participate in this attempt to smash the current record!

As part of the attempt, all participants must read the same five stories by Robert Munsch, Family Literacy Day Honorary Chair. The five stories are available as individual books and also in a single-column collection Munschworks 2: The Second Munsch Treasury. To be eligible for the record, there must be a 30-minute reading session with groups of any size. This can range from one adult reading to one child, up to large groups as long as there is ore adult reader for every 35 children being read to. All reading events must occur within the specified 24 hour period, or it will not be counted towards the record. In order to accommodate this reading event within the specified timeframe, students will be reading from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. The regular dismissal time for all AMBE schools will be delayed and all students will be dismissed between 2:30 and 2:40 p.m. All afternoon bus drop off of students will also be delayed for approximately 10-15 minutes.

AMBE has been participating in ABC’s Family Literacy Day activities since 2005 and proclaimed January 27th of every year as Family Literacy Day (FLD). FLD was created by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation and Honda Canada in 1999 to promote the importance of reading and learning together as a family all year round.
