A Voice from the Eastern Door

Vet to Vets

The month of November was a month to remember our deceased and living veterans and to be thankful for all that we have received. These two reasons are closely connected because we would not have freedom without our veterans. People today forget this because they have had freedom all of their lives. Talk to immigrants who have lived under dictatorships and communism. Also speak to mothers who have lost a loved one in the war.

Post 1479 lost eleven members this year. Please remember Michael Benedict, Joseph G. Buckshot, John Chubb, Ernest Cook, Joseph Robert Herne, Sidney Herne, George LaFrance, William Lowe, Alex Oakes, Joseph Rourke, and Eugene White. May their souls rest in peace.

Members of Andrew W. Cook/St. Regis Mohawk Post 1479 has been very good to the veterans. WWII members’ dues are paid, disabled veterans on low income are paid; military funerals are held upon request; dinners after the funeral are held in the Legion Building; support is given to the nursing homes where veterans are living and ceremonies are held there.

In regards to the military funeral ceremony, the Legion cannot hold it unless the family requests it. So, the first thing that must be done is to call the Legion at 518-358-9976 and request the military funeral. The discharge paper (DD-214) must be presented to the funeral director so that he can get an American flag for the coffin. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Please try to find it; so you know where it is when the time comes. Those of you who are Legion members should keep a copy at the Legion.

Two pamphlets have been ordered. They are “What To Do Before A Veteran Dies” and” When A Veteran Dies.” If any member of a veteran’s family wants one, please call 518 358-2711 for a free copy. Each pamphlet outlines what a person needs to do and gives general information regarding the veteran’s benefits.
