Mohawk school expected to reopen in New Year

The tumultuous school year faced by faculty and staff and the St. Regis Mohawk School could be back to normal this coming January. That’s when Principal Sharlee Thomas is hoping her student body and staff can move back into their school.

“The most recent information we have received from the New York State Education Department is that construction is progressing slightly ahead of schedule and that we can begin planning for our return to the St. Regis Mohawk School,” Thomas said. “At this point in time, the projected return will be sometime after winter break – perhaps as early as the beginning of second semester.”

The school was closed last month when an October snowstorm wiped out power throughout Akwesasne, resulting in massive flooding at the SRMS and damage to the heating system. The school’s classes were moved to the Salmon River Central campus school, where rooms were rearranged and relocated to make room for the incoming 500 students.
