A Voice from the Eastern Door
PRESS RELEASE — The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has scheduled a referendum for Saturday, December 13th, 2008 to consider two pending agreements with National Grid. The Tribal Council and National Grid have been engaged in discussion over the past several years regarding electrical service to the Akwesasne Territory. Those discussions have culminated in two agreements, setting forth the terms of the Tribe’s relationship with National Grid, including the terms under which the Tribe might sever its relationship with National Grid, if it decides to form a Tribally-owned utility company.
The referendum will decide the question of whether or not the people approve of the Tribal Council entering into the two agreements. Prior to the referendum, a series of three public information meetings will be held: Monday December 1st, at 5:00 PM in the lobby of the Tribal Community Building; a live, call-in talk show on CKON talk on Tuesday December 2, at 10:15 AM; and another public meeting on December 10th, at 5:00 PM in the lobby of the Tribal Community Building.
Voters can become familiar with the agreements at the public information meetings through questions and discussion. The referendum will take place in the lobby of the Tribal Community Building between the hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, December 13th.
