A Voice from the Eastern Door
Parents of students at any of the three Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education’s schools were invited to attend school for a day this week with their child.
On Tuesday, Tsi Snaihne School students brought their parents in for a few hours, and on Wednesday students at Kana:takon School and the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School did the same.
Grandparents, aunts, uncles or other family members were equally as welcome to attend school with a student.
The activity – held for the second year – gives parents a realistic idea of what their child’s school life is like. The parents sit with the child at the student’s desk and take part in whatever activity the teacher has planned for the day.
The event also gives students a boost of pride at showing off their school, classmates and teacher to their parent(s).
Traditionally, parents only get a sense of their child’s school life by parent-teacher conferences or special events that bring parents in, like concerts. The “Bring Your Parent to School Day” grows from that idea and gives parents an even closer look and hands-on experience.
