Mohawk School students moved to Salmon River

The entire student population at the St. Regis Mohawk School has been relocated to the Salmon River Central School campus in Fort Covington.

The move was made following massive flooding and damages that occurred at the SRMS last week as a result of a snowstorm and power outage.

The school was among hundreds of structures in Akwesasne that was without power for an extended period of time on Oct. 28 and 29. The school’s water pumps shutdown and two feet of water filled the basement, causing fuel leakage and damage to the school’s heating system.

Students and staff were relocated to Salmon River on Friday, Oct. 31. School officials do not yet have an estimated date of when classes may resume at the SRMS, but it could take weeks or months. The condition of the school is continuing to be assessed.

The flooding was additional problems faced at the school on top of mold and asbestos issues that plagued the first two months of the school year. Several classes of students had already been relocated to the Salmon River campus school as a result of those issues.

Both schools fall under the Salmon River Board of Education.
