A very early snowstorm swept across the North Country Tuesday evening, leaving a blanket of snow and ice on the ground and trees Wednesday morning.
Thousands of Akwesasne residents experienced power outages during the storm, with hundreds remaining powerless throughout the night and into the day Wednesday.
As of press time (Wednesday afternoon) parts of Hogansburg and all of St. Regis Road remained without power as National Grid’s attempts to repair power lines were interrupted by continuing high winds.
On Wednesday morning, National Grid reported that more than 4,000 homes were without power in Franklin County alone.
The National Weather Service reported that areas throughout New York State received between 6 inches to a foot of snow. In many areas, the wet snow fell heavily on power lines. Ice was also an issue on roads and walkways.
Akwesasne was expected to see a few more inches of snowfall Wednesday evening, but conditions are expected to improve in time for Halloween, with highs in the 50s on Friday.
