A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club recently held a poster contest with club members with the theme of “Freedom from Drugs and Alcohol through Culture”. Club members were to enter a poster which portrayed a lifestyle free from drugs and alcohol through the tradition and practices of native culture.
A total of eight posters were turned in to be judged by ABGC Board Members based on Creativity, Originality, Most Artistic and the poster with the strongest message. Each of the club members participating received a ticket to an Ottawa Senators Hockey game. The winner of the contest won a gift certificate to the St. Lawrence Mall and a beautiful traditional fan made by Ian Clute.
The winning poster was made by Tosakia’teni McDonald for her poster titled, “Which side would you choose?”. Her poster along with the others will be posted around Akwesasne. If you see Tosakia’teni, congratulate her and give her a high five for her wonderful poster.
Other Club Member participants were: Ariel Lazore, Derrick Carr, Ranawatsistaronkwas McDonald, Kanonsentha Montoya, Myranda Carr, Ronni Sunday, Arihonni David.
Aronhiaies Herne, ABGC Cultural Coordinator said, “We, at the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club would like to say niawenhko:wa to all of the participants and to the ABGC Board members for participating in the contest. The Club members who participated all have an amazing insight as to what a drug and alcohol free lifestyle should be. You have truly impacted the club as well as the community with your posters.”
