A Voice from the Eastern Door

Cape Air offering direct flights from Massena to Albany

Massena town officials and representatives from the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe were among those who attended an event last week at the Massena International Airport, at which Cape Air formerly announced plans to offer direct flights between Massena and Albany.

Dan Wolf, President and founder of the New England based airline said, “This is a great day and I pledge to all of you in the North Country and southern Ontario that the entire Cape Air Team work hard to earn your loyalty and fill the role of your community airline providing convenient dependable and affordable air service to the state capital.”

Cape Air will be offering three direct flights between Massena and Albany, where travelers will be able to connect to other cities through larger airlines. The airline is offering the same service to the cities of Ogdensburg andWatertown.

Costs of the flights are being offered at $49 each way.

“Flying to Albany from Massena has the potential to save significant travel time versus using other regional airports,” said SRMT Chief James Ransom, who attended the event. “It is a 2 1/2 hour drive to Burlington and a 3 hour drive to Syracuse, the two biggest regional airports.  Flying out of Montreal or Ottawa means you need a passport so if you don’t have one, it is no longer an option.”

Ransom said the $49 introductory rate is “a tremendous offer.”

“There will have to be some coordination to get flights out of Albany but most of the major airlines fly out of there,” he said. “I think it can save time and money if our travel plans can be coordinated properly.”

Cape Air is a 50-plane independent airline based out of Massachusetts. They offer 900 flights daily, with new destinations always being added.

“Dependable air service and connectivity through Albany are essential if New York’s businesses are to develop and prosper, Cape Air’s commitment to quality service will ensure our business and leisure travelers will have vital and timely access to and from our North Country,” said David E. Langdon, chairman of the Albany County Airport Authority.

Massena’s Town Supervisor Gary Edwards said, “With the recent activation of Cape Air the Town of Massena and the entire North Country is again being reunited with the rest of the world.”

Cape Air flights can be purchased online at Expedia, Travelocity, or flycapeair.com.
