A new fall field lacrosse club called the “Kanienkehaka Krunch” has been formed in Akwesasne. The club was formed by local parents and volunteers who all wanted to keep local youth active in field lacrosse, and who want to keep youth occupied with sports, not drugs or alcohol.
The club consists of three divisions, a Modified, Junior Varsity and a Varsity team, ranging from ages from 8-18, with approximately 60 athletes participating. Practices are currently being held at the new sports field located near the senior citizens center. This past Sunday, the club utilized the field for all teams. It was nice to see the sports field used by the club, seeing the parking lot full of parents and spectators and how a little rain did not keep anyone away.
The teams will be traveling to various tournaments in New York State and also one tournament in Connecticut, which could possibly lead to a huge tournament in Florida. The first tournament begins this weekend in the Lake George area. The modified team will play on Saturday, Oct. 4th and the JV/Varsity team will play on Sunday, Oct. 5th. For many of the Varsity players, participating in tournaments exposes them to future college prospects and endeavors. The upcoming high school seniors, who love the sport of field lacrosse, will have the opportunity to showcase what they have been taught and learned from past field players. By entering these various tournaments, they will get to demonstrate their gifts in lacrosse, which for some are rarely noticed. Last year, which was a brainstorm for starting this club, a few of the current players were noticed by a few college scouts; one of the scouts was from Georgetown University. Hearing this gave parents more motivation to start the club in hopes of one day seeing one of their own club members entering top schools of their choice.
A big thank you should be sent out to the parents, volunteers and especially the youth who all are involved in making the club successful. Good luck to all our players participating in all upcoming tournaments.
