A Voice from the Eastern Door
Author: Neil Shusterman
The book this week, Unwind, is a fictional story about three kids living in a very different world than ours, going on a journey for their lives. I found this book to be interesting and unexpectedly enthralling.
Connor was, is, and will be a fighter. It’s all he’s known. It is, ultimately, why he’s going to be unwound. When someone is unwound, the doctors harvest all of their organs and give them to people who may need transplants, basically, making something good come out of someone bad. Risa on the other hand, is not bad. She is however, an unwanted ward of the state, who is also being unwound because they don’t think she can offer much of anything except a talent for piano. Lev on the other hand, welcomes being unwound. His religion tells him that it’s what he has to do to fulfill his life, that it is his destiny, so he knew his fate from birth. By some weird twist of fate, these teens meet and form a sort of camaraderie, though the only thing binding them is their need to survive.
This book, with its large amount of suspense and adventure, also has a diverse and likeable set of characters. I recommend this to all readers who love a good story, with a good ending.
