Ronnie Square

Mr. Ronnie “Rochester” Square, 51, of Akwesasne Street, St. Regis, Quebec, died Monday (September 22, 2008) afternoon at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, Quebec, where he had been a patient since September 9th.

He was born July 1, 1957 in Cornwall, Ontario, the son of Stanley J. and Kathryn Benedict Square. He attended school in St. Regis and graduated from General Vanier. He also took welding at St. Lawrence College. He married Peggy David in 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The marriage ended in separation.

Ronnie was an ironworker for Local #711 in Montreal and was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Hogansburg. He was known for being very quick witted and very intelligent being knowledgeable on many topics. One of his greatest enjoyments was his Harley-Davidson. He was very musically inclined, playing the piano and guitar as well as singing. He enjoyed spending time on the river and being with his mother and grandchildren. He also was an excellent pool player. Ronnie also looked after several children through the St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital and in various parts of Africa.

Ronnie is survived by his mother, Kathryn, St. Regis, Quebec; by 2 daughters, Rhonda Smoke and her companion, Victor Oakes, Hogansburg; Carrie David, Hogansburg; a son, Cody David and his companion Chantelle Cooke, at home; by 9 grandchildren, Quade Smoke, Timmy, Taylin, Trevan and Tionna David, Kyran and Kaiden Skidders, Arysissa Hopps, and Cayde Lazore; by 3 sisters, Bonnie Square, Hogansburg; Debbie and Donnie Smoke, Hogansburg; Stephanie Square, St. Regis, Quebec; 1 brother, Randy and Carrie Square, Hogansburg; a sister-in-law, Susie Square, Cornwall Island, Ontario; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Ronnie J. David Square on December 18, 1991, his father, Stanley on March 10, 1997, a brother, Richard Allen “Ricky” Square on February 6, 1992, and a sister, Penny E. Square on April 14, 2001.

Friends may call at the home of his mother Kathryn, 34 Akwesasne Street, St. Regis, Quebec, beginning at 2:00 PM Wednesday until 12:00 PM Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 2:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis, Quebec. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
