Mrs. Katie C. Jock, age 102, a resident of Iakhihsohtha, Home for the Elderly, Snye, Quebec for the past seven years, and formerly of Jock Road, Hogansburg, died Tuesday afternoon (September 16, 2008) at Iakhihsohtha.
She was born August 7, 1906 in Hogansburg, the daughter of John S. and Mary Cook Herne. She attended schools on the Reservation. She married David D. Jock on November 24, 1924 at St. Regis Catholic Church. Mr. Jock predeceased her on September 6, 1970.
She first worked as a cutter at Shields Slipper Factory in Bombay. She then went to work for many years as a cook at the Mohawk School. She was a lifetime communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens and volunteered for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. She was an avid quilter and card player. She loved to play bingo and was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers baseball fan. She also enjoyed all kinds of puzzles.
She is survived by her 3 children, Betty and Ben Kelly, Hogansburg; Tim “T.J.” Jock, Hogansburg; Sherle and Jim Mainville, Massena; by 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Marietta Jock Herne on April 11, 1966; a son, Leslie J. Jock on July 25, 1973; a daughter-in-law, Corrine Jock on April 16, 1992; 2 granddaughters, Della A. Jock on November 27, 1989 and Rosalie K. Jock on December 27, 1954, a grandson, Jimmy John Jock on June 21, 1985, and a great granddaughter, Jennifer “Jen” Jock on July 9, 2000; by 2 sisters, Mildred Ledger and Minnie Laffin Atwater; and by 4 brothers, Walter, George, Julius, and Charlie Herne.
Friends called starting Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ., pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hogansburg.
