A Voice from the Eastern Door
John Lazore picked up a major victory in his quest for the Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modified Championship for 2008 this past Saturday night at Mohawk International Raceway by winning the 21st running of the Wolfclan Truckstop 25.
Billy Cook and Clayton Benedict started on the front row with Benedict grabbing the lead followed by Cook, Delbert LeGrow, John Lazore and Mitchell Jock. Both Mitchell Jock and John Lazore were on the move early and by lap #7 Lazore got by LeGrow and began challenging Benedict for the top spot but Clayton held tough and the rookie sent a message to John that taking 1st place away from him wasn’t going to be easy. On lap #11, Lazore made a slick move and got by Benedict for the top spot.
At the halfway mark, it was Lazore on top with Clayton Benedict, Delbert LeGrow, Mitchell Jock and Jeff Marshall rounding out the top five. In lap #13, Mitchell Jock started to make his move again, first by picking off Delbert LeGrow for third and then getting by Clayton Benedict for second. Earlier in the race, right at the start, Carey Terrance was involved in an incident that took him out of the race. This made the out come of the race for both Lazore and Jock all that much more important. By the time Jock had got to second, Lazore had already built up a sizeable lead and even though the rookie made great effort catching him, he just did not have enough laps left to do it as Lazore made a crucial trip to the Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory Lane. The two top Rookies had a great night with Mitchell Jock finishing second and Clayton Benedict finishing third. Jeff Marshall and Delbert LeGrow rounded out the top five.
In the UMP/DIRT Pro Stocks, Louie Jackson returned to the Speedway and picked up a big win to keep him in the top ten in points.
Jackson, who has been limited from racing on Saturday night because of his business, which is Action Race Parts, had to first get by a very determined Allen Peters who led for the first sixteen laps of the 20 lap event. Peters who needed a good finish to have any shot at the 2008 Track Championship and a win would definitely put him in to contention as both Jody Swamp and Stephane Lebrun, who are first and second in points, were struggling in the race. Jackson began to make his charge from his fifth starting spot in lap #4 and after a bout with both Dave Papineau and Travis Back, found himself right on the back bumper of Peters.
On lap #17, “Mr. Outside” made his move on the high side of turns 1 and 2 and got by Peters for the top spot. Allen tried everything he could to get back on top but Jackson’s car handled great through the turns and Louie cruised home to victory. Peters settled for second but it still kept him alive for the point chase. Travis Back finished third with Dion Oakes and Ricky Thompson rounding out the top five.
In the Pecore Performance and Transmissions Semi Pros, second generation driver Kevin Fetterly, Jr. found his way to the Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory Lane finally after many tries.
Fetterly started on the outside of the front row with Kevin Clement on the inside. Kevin grabbed the lead quickly with Stuart Mossow close behind. The two battled fiercely for the top spot with Mossow challenging Fetterly with every turn of the wheel. But Kevin held tough and went on to score a much sough after and much desired win. Stuart Mossow ran a great race to finish second. Brent Kelsey had his best run of the season with an impressive third place finish. Jay Montour returned to the speedway and finished fourth with the consistent Ryan Phillips finishing fifth.
In the Helm’s Salvage and Trucking Bandits, Eli Gilbert is sending a message to his competitors that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Bandit Division.
Gilbert who started fifth on the grid took the lead from early race leader popular Claudia Tarbell and continued on for the big victory. Tarbell settled for second but never the less it was just like winning as she inches closer to the coveted 2008 Track Championship as rival Joey Foster ran into problems earlier in the race that put him pit side for the balance of the event. Dudes Thompson, Kyle Bjork and Randy Blanchard rounded out the top five.
In the Bash Brothers Motorsports Enduros, it was Kevin Thompson right at the finish line squeaking by Josh Jock for the win. TJ Herne, Rock Niles and Konkie Lazore rounded out the top five.
