A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Bank of Montreal, the Akwesasne Powwow Committee, and Enbridge Gas showed their commitment to Akwesasne’s youth and their growth Thursday. Eleven Akwesasne students who graduated high school this past June received the monetary awards Thursday at a special luncheon hosted by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.
Along with representatives from the powwow committee, the BMO and Enbridge, the event was also attended by MCA chiefs and parents and friends of the selected students.
Two students received awards from the powwow committee: Lauren Adams and Hannah LaFrance. They were required to write essays in order to be selected.
Five students received $1000 awards from the BMO. They were Kaylynn Adams, Hannah LaFrance, Marcy McDonald, Jillian Morgan and Alana Green.
Five students also received $1000 awards from Enbridge. They were Meshweb Akiwenzie, Sueann Swamp, Jacey Hall, Tiffany King and Victoria Ransom.
“It’s a relationship I can see us wanting to continue,” said Jim Tweedie, Manager of Operations – Eastern Region, for Enbridge. “There are very few things we can do as rewarding as this.”
The Honorable James Bartleman, former Lt. Governor of Ontario, made a special trip to Akwesasne to speak to the students about their value as members of the Akwesasne community. Bartleman is a member of the Chippewas of Mnjikaning First Nation. Northern reservations like it have high rates of teen suicide and Bartleman spoke for a length of time on the subject.
