A Voice from the Eastern Door
Six individuals from Akwesasne, Cornwall and Bombay are in custody or wanted by police in connection with the May 13, 2008 Stockholm, New York murder. Federal investigators released details of an indictment Thursday that lists Alan Jacobs, 33 of Laughing Road, Akwesasne, Kaientanoron Swamp, 28 of River Road, Akwesasne, Derek Cook, 28 of Indian Village Road, Akwesasne, Chad Edwards, 21 of Third Street, Cornwall, Anson Edwards, 23 of Third Street, Cornwall, and Brian Latulipe of Reardon Road, Bombay as either wanted or in custody in connection with the murder.
Daniel Simonds is believed to have been beaten and shot at his home in what investigators are calling a drug robbery.
All six men are being charged with conspiring to commit a Hobbs Act Robbery – a robbery involving the international passing of drugs or money. Drugs found in Simonds home immediately following the murder are believed to have been grown in Canada.
According to U.S. District Attorney Nicole Duve, “the indictment alleges that…these defendants, along with others, planned to rob Simonds of his Canadian-grown marijuana and money. In furtherance of this plan, some of them went to Simonds’ residence at 649 Porter Lynch Road, Stockholm, New York in St. Lawrence County. While at the residence, they beat and shot Simonds before fleeing the scene. Simonds died of a gunshot wound seven hours later at a hospital in Vermont.”
Latulipe was the first to be taken into custody last month. Jacobs was arrested on July 11 for an unrelated offense to previous release conditions. Swamp turned himself over to police on July 21.
Both Edwards men and Cook remain at large.
On July 22, police swarmed the Raquette Point area of Akwesasne where the homes of both Jacobs and Cook were served with search warrants in connection with the murder.
According to Duve, if convicted each of the six men faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, up to $250,000 fines and up to five years of supervised release following any period of incarceration.
“The charges brought against these defendants are the result of an ongoing investigation undertaken by the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s office in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s office, the New York State Police Major Crimes Unit, the Drug enforcement Administration and the U.S. Attorney’s office,” the statement read.
Authorities continue to refrain from naming which individual they believe pulled the trigger.
