A Voice from the Eastern Door

Book: A Rose for Melinda

Author: Lurlene McDaniel

The article this week is about a book that I have read numerous times for its well-written and tear jerking qualities. Lurlene McDaniel will always go down as one of my favorite authors because she writes so well and even though her stories are sad…they always seem to end up having happy endings.

Melinda Skye and Jesse Rose have been friends since the first grade, when they had exchanged their first set of notes in class. Jesse had taken an instant liking to Melinda. Their relationship continued over their junior and partway through high school years. Jesse’s parents were divorced and now his mother had to move across the country in search of a new job to support her and Jesse. Melinda and Jesse’s parting is filled of promises to keep in touch, promises that are more then kept. Then, on an important day in Melinda’s dancing career, she becomes ill and faints in class. A few days later Melinda is diagnosed with leukemia. Everyone is devastated with the news, especially Jesse. After a few months of treatment Melinda goes into remission. Her life is slowly returning to normal again even though there will always be the thought in the back of every ones mind of the return of her illness. What will the future bring? Will she be pronounced cured? Or will she lose the war after winning the battle?

This book will leave you feeling so many emotions. I really enjoyed reading it and hope that those of you who try and read it will. It is written entirely of e-mails and letters and diaries but that just makes it all the better. I recommend this to young adults but I’m sure adults would like it as well.
