Lillian M. Herne

Mrs. Lillian M. Herne, age 88, of 1347 State Route 37, Hogansburg, died Sunday afternoon (July 6, 2008) at the Highland Nursing Home. She had been in failing  health for the past few months.

She was born May 6, 1920 on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, the daughter  of Michael and Sarah Ransom Jacobs. She attended Mohawk Schools. She married  Jacob Herne on November 29, 1939 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev.  Michael Jacobs, officiating. Mr. Herne predeceased her on February 4, 1945.

She worked as a cutter and did some bead work for the Shields Slipper Factory in Bombay for 23 years. At one time she worked as a housekeeper in Harrietstown and in Syracuse. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilt making,  and most recently painting, especially flowers and still life. She was a  communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary  Society. She was also a member of the Akwesasne Senior Citizens, belonging to  their Quilting Club where she taught quilt making.

She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, David and Judy Herne,  Houston, Texas; Michael Herne, Hogansburg; Regina and Donald Alexander, Bedford, Indiana; Bruce and Doreen Herne, Constable; by 12 grandchildren, Charles Alexander, Heather Kleinschmidt, Daniel  Alexander, Autumn Maldanado, Dr. Kathleen B. Herne, David Peter and John  Michael Herne, Karen Suzanne Pomes, Dr. Kelly Lynn Duncan, Shannon Margaret  Jaquette, and Jeffery and Shawn Herne; and 9 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her 2 sisters, Dorothy Jacobs, Hogansburg; Margaret “Margie” Hamlin, Canandaigua, NY; her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Linda Jacobs, Hogansburg; by several nieces and nephews and by 2 godchildren Clinton Jacobs and Sharon Thompson.

She was predeceased by her brother, Francis “Frank” Jacobs, March 21,  2003.

Friends may call starting Tuesday 5:00 PM at Kateri Hall until 1:00 PM Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 2:00 PM at  St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hogansburg. Arrangements are with  the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice or St. Regis Catholic Church Renovation Fund.
