Man holds off police in hotel room

A Cornwall man with several warrants for arrest held off police from a hotel room Tuesday in Cornwall.

Cornwall Community Police said they received a tip that John Papineau, 28, was inside a Vincent Massey Drive hotel. Police attended the hotel at approximately 4 p.m. and said Papineau refused to come out.

Police then learned that there were also three females inside the room, who were also refusing to exit.

Cornwall police contacted the Cornwall Tactical Unit, OPP Canine and members of the OPP Emergency Response Team and negotiations began between the authorities and Papineau.

At 9:30 p.m., Papineau and the three women surrendered to police. Papineau was taken into custody and held pending a court appearance on June 25.

Police said Papineau was wanted for a parole warrant and also two Cornwall Community Police warrants.

Further charges are pending in this incident.
