A Voice from the Eastern Door
A throng of motorcycle riders caravanned to Akwesasne Saturday afternoon to begin a daylong poker run that began at the Hogansburg American Legion. Although there were laughs, smiles and fun all around, the reason for the gathering was less joyful. Helen Leonard, a fellow biker from Massena who owns a new bikers bar with her husband, is terminally ill with cancer.
Leonard, remarkably, also participated in the poker run and graciously accepted a check from the American Legion. The money raised throughout the day was to help Leonard and her husband get through their difficult time with less monetary worries. The couple owns the Soft Hills motorcycle bar in Massena and they are both well known in the biker community.
As the bikers gathered at the Legion, their bikes parked outside created an overwhelming site. Dozens of shiny motorcycles lined the parking lot while their drivers filled the Legion.
The poker run took the group to several businesses throughout the north part of the North Country, from Akwesasne to Moira, Potsdam to Winthrop, Parishville to Massena. Each participant paid $10 to participate, which also paid for a pig roast and meal after the run.
More than 200 bikers came out Saturday to support their fellow rider.
