Pair of wins has Indians 3 pts out of first

The A’nowa’korowa arena doubled as an oven this past weekend, but the Jr. A Indians battled and found a way to get a big 4 pts. “It’s not too bad (the heat), you get used to it once your out there a little while,” said team captain Jeremy Thompson sitting in front of a giant fan with a block of ice on his head.

Saturday night saw the visiting Orillia Rama-Hammond Kings come to town. The Kings however proved to be little opposition as the Indians disposed of them 12-4.

Kyle Buchanan put up the biggest point total for an Indians player yet this season with 8 off of 3 goals and 5 assists. Mark Kirby had his biggest game off the year with 5 points and a pair of goals. Jeremy and Jerome Thompson added two goals apiece. Blake Kenny, Justin Ingram, Cody and Peter Jacobs all had singles in the win.

“The boy’s played well,” said head coach Adam Thompson afterwards, “we need to work on our discipline and other little things but its all starting to come together.”

Sunday afternoon the Indians played host to the winless Mississauga Tomahawks. Akwesasne made sure they would stay winless as they coasted to a 9-2 victory. Joe Tallis got his second start of the season in nets and carried a shutout bid until early in the third period before it was spoiled.

Buchanan and Miles Thompson each had two goals and 2 assists to lead the offence. The big weekend from Buchanan put him in to 4th in the league in scoring. Kirby popped two goals for the second straight night and Dwight Bero, Neal Hopps and Matt Noble all scored to help erase the Kings.

A hot and tired team will be glad to get some rest over the week before a tough road trip coming on the weekend. The team will start in Burlington on Saturday at 7:00 before playing their biggest game of the year the following day vs. Six Nations and then finally wrapping up the trip in Peterborough on Tuesday night.

The Six Nations Arrows Express have lost just once all year and along with Orangeville and Akwesasne, appear to be the class of the Jr. A league.

Both teams are in for a fight with firepower and toughness oozing out of each team.

“This is our test, this is a big game,” said Jeremy Thompson after the game.

Akwesasne will know if they passed the test after the weekend.
