A Voice from the Eastern Door
The second year for the Hall of Fame Induction at Salmon River was another huge success. With about 350 meal tickets sold, the attendance of community, family and friends were eagerly there to witness the ceremony of the 2008 Induction of Athletes. This year, five graduating seniors were recognized for the Wall of Honor. They were Alison Smiddy, Chris Lewis, Okiokwinon Francis, Marc Plante and Katie Bero. Bill Plante spoke on behalf of each student and announced their sports and accomplishments during their involvement and attainment of 10 Varsity letters. Each of these athletes had very impressive records and four out of five belonged to the National Honor Society. Academics are a good balance to go with the sports and strengthen an individual physically and mentally. Each student sent out thanks to the selection committee, teachers, community and parents.
Next came the Posthumous Induction for John Mulvana. John Mulvana was nominated by Kim Treptow and was presented by a very good friend John Lenny, a former teacher at SR. John M. was a member of the first graduating class at Salmon River and his sports included baseball, football and basketball. He always gave all the credit to “the team” and not to himself. Bobby Delorimiere was nominated and introduced by his son Thomas. He shared some humorous stories of his dad’s athletic experiences from his sports of baseball, football and lacrosse. They were both joined by the whole family after Bobby’s acceptance speech.
Next was John Francis who was inducted into the SR Hall as well as St. Lawrence Hall of Fame. His sister Pat relayed so many fond memories of John about his high school success and beyond. During his H.S. years he played baseball, football and basketball. He continued at SLU with his success. It was nice to see John visit all the way from Naples, Florida. David Sherwood was nominated by Norm Treptow who is a very good friend. They met in 1964 and Norm said, “David shined the most in the pool.” He made and held many records at SR. David sent thanks to his coach Bob Alpi and to his parents for helping him to reach his goals.
Janice Mock nominated her sister Jocelyn Fournia Kelly for her athletic skills in swimming and basketball. She mentioned to the audience that their parents never missed any of her games at SR and SLU. When Jocelyn spoke, she expressed her belief that the team needs come before the individual wants. An athletic should stay focused and must believe in themselves. Jocelyn appreciated the knowledge of her former coach Dick McLean. “I’m almost at the point of kicking the bench and throwing the clipboard,” said Jocelyn as she told about her present experiences as a coach. Many girls who played basketball will remember that behavior of their coach in a kind way as they remember “Pudgie”.
Jeff Jock was the rifleman at SR and set a 3yr. membership to the All Northern State selections. He also went on to be a member of The National Honor Society. He also made his mark at Canisuis College. His presenter was Jack Buchanon who was one of his coaches. Jeff thanked his coach along with Earl Schell and his parents. He was all entertaining inductee with his humorous stories.
Following the individuals was the 1967 Baseball Team, 1968 - 69 Girls Basketball Team, 1986 - 87 Girls Basketball Team and 1988 - 89 Hockey Team. Mark Martin was nominated by his brother Shawn and presented by Brian Conners. Mark’s sports were soccer, basketball and lacrosse. After high school, Mark went on to basketball, and lacrosse. After high school, Mark went on to play in World games with the Iroquois Nationals from 1986 - 94.
Many thanks go out to the cafeteria staff for the delicious meal. Also to the janitorial staff who was available through out the day for any of the needs to the HOF committee.
Carl Cook was available to take pictures for the evening and if you want to order any of the pictures give him a call at 358- 9272. Hats and T-shirts are available and can be bought by talking to Bill Plante at 358-6670.
The most thanks goes out to the dedication and hard work to the SR Hall of Fame Committee. Each of you comes in with your own specialty and together has produced the 2nd Annual SR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for sports for our most deserving athletes. Keep up the good work for the future years.
