A Voice from the Eastern Door
The 18th running of the Memorial Cup sponsored by Frenchie’s Chevrolet in Massena looks to be one of the closest in quite sometime. After the first two weeks of racing at the Mohawk International Raceway in Akwesasne (Hogansburg), NY, the Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory lane has seen two different winners grace the checkers in the Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modified division. “This is the closest and most competitive field of small blocks I have seen at this track in a long time,” says track Co-General Manager Jamie Davis, “This will be one of the closest if not THE closest Memorial Cups we have ever seen yet.” Davis went on to say that if someone comes in from the outside like last years winner Danny Johnson who had one of the most convincing victories in “The Cups” history, it could change his prognosis. All in all the field is very close with the likes of Carey Terrance, Roy Tarbell, Kyle Jacobs, John Lazore, Perry Francis and other Akwesasne notables leading the charge it could be tough this time around for an invader to come in and just walk away with “The Cup”. “I just don’t see it happening,” says Track Promoter and racer Jody Swamp, “The competition is much closer and a lot tougher than it was a year ago in this division for a car and driver to come into this race and dominate it from beginning to end.”
A driver who has been very consistent so far has been Chelsea, Quebec’s Eric Gauvreau. Gauvreau sits 5th in the point standings so far this season at M.I.R. but this is the kind of racer that could come from out of nowhere with all the right breaks and win this kind of race. Then you have drivers like Mitchell Jock, Clayton Benedict and Martin Gagne who have moved up to the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and so far have shown that they will have a say in every race they are competing in this season.
The 18th running of the “Memorial Cup” will surely be a race to remember. Also on this special holiday race card will be the 8th running of “The Veterans Trophy” for the Action Race Parts UMP/DIRT Pro Stocks.
The Pecore Performance and Transmissions Semi Pros, Helm Salvage and Trucking Bandits and the Bash Brothers Motorsports Enduros will be featured as well. Pit gates open at 5:00pm, main grandstand at 6:00pm; race time is 7:00pm sharp.
