Tribe swears in first tribal court judge

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has appointed a Mohawk man to the position of Tribal Court Judge.

Peter J. Herne was officially sworn-in Monday morning by tribal chiefs Lorraine White, Barbara Lazore and James Ransom.

His appointment is a significant step for the tribe in their effort to reform the system of government there.

Also sworn-in Monday were two new members to the election board, Mark Martin and Betty Roundpoint. They join sitting members Katrina Jacobs and Christie Horn.

Council also swore in a new member to the police commission: Glen Lazore.
