A Voice from the Eastern Door
The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are under way this week at Sault St. Marie. It is being hosted by Garden River First Nation. Over the span of the week April 27-May 3rd, many teams from across Canada will be competing for the crown as champion.
The Ontario South Ladies are playing their best to come out on top.
Their first game was against Alberta on Sunday. The win went to Ontario South with a score of 5-1. In the first period, with some quick passing action, Savannah Francis took a pass from Alley Bero and Olivia Cook to get on the scoreboard. At 16:19Kelly Sabatine took apass from Chelsea Doolittle to make it two for the period. Around this time, Alberta placed their only marker of the game. The third goal came from Alley with help from Kelly and Olivia. #16 Kelly Sabatine got the fourth goal. An open net shot by Chelsea Doolittle sealed the win. The star of the game was Kelly Sabatine.
The Opening Ceremony took place on Sunday evening at 7pm. with Ted Nolan as guest and speaker. He dropped the puck to start the game between Ontario North and Manitoba.
Monday’s game for the girls was against the tough Eastern Door and the North (regular rivals). The winner was Ontario South with a score of 3-1. At the first period there were no goals. Each team did their best and skated hard. At the onset of the second, EDN made goal #1. The 2nd period was filled with penalties for each team, it was obviously a chippy period. At 8:50 of the second, Amanda King connected from Alley and Kelly for the first goal. The third period added two more for Os with goals from Taylor Edwards and another from Alley Bero with help from Amanda and Olivia.
These hockey filled days are totally awesome. For anyone who enjoys hockey, this would be the place to be. We, again, thank everyone who supported this team of ladies to be able to attend this National Championship. They are seeing a new place, new people and new experiences.
Ontario South beat BC on Tuesday by a score of 5-2. Kelly Sabatine earned 3 goals throughout the game, while Alley Bero received 1 goal and 2 assists. Breanne Jacobs got a goal and other single assists went to Toni Garrow, Rachal Simon, Amanda King, and 3 for Olivia Cook. Chelsea Doolittle also had a helper. The star of this game was #6 Olivia Cook.
On Wednesday morning the Ontario South girls teamed up against Manitoba and won 5-1. The score makers were Kelly Sabatine, 3 goals and 1 assist, Alley Bero 2 goals and 1 assist, Amanda King 3 assists, Ashley 1 assist, Rachel Simon 1 assist.
The teams were scheduled to meet Wednesday night to determine the medal rounds.
