Mrs. Evelyn H. Donaldson, 91, of 100 North Main Street, Massena, died Saturday (April 26, 2008) afternoon at Massena Memorial Hospital, where had been a patient since April 16th.
She was born August 27, 1916 in Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts the daughter of the late Floyd B. and Arie Junelle Brodie Hopson. She attended and graduated from Massena High School in 1934. She later attended Canton Agricultural and Technical College. She married Vernon J. Donaldson on June 20, 1939 at the Baptist Parsonage in Massena with Rev. Arthur Lacy, officiating. Mr. Donaldson predeceased her on March 26, 1996.
She, along with her late husband, owned and operated the Donaldson Funeral Home in Massena for nearly 75 years. She also worked for the New York Telephone Company from 1937 until 1945. She was crowned Miss Massena in 1935. She was a member of the Cretona Chapter #516, Order of the Eastern Star in Massena. She enjoyed crafts, loved reading, and traveling.
Evelyn is survived by her 3 sons and their wives, David E. and Joan Donaldson, Zephyrhills, Florida; Gary R. “Digger” and Sandra Donaldson, Massena; Gregory A. and Gail Donaldson, Cicero; 2 grandsons, Bradley D. Donaldson, Zephyrhills, Florida; Blake Donaldson and his wife, Tammy, Zephyrhills, Florida; by 2 granddaughters, Carrie Lynn Donaldson, Massena; Robin Stephenson, Massena; by her sister, Norma Sirotiak, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her brother, Floyd N. Hopson, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania; her sister-in-law, Nancy Hopson, Lacy, Washington; and by 7 nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Richard E. Hopson on November 9, 2007.
Friends may call Wednesday 7-9 PM and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Friday 10:00 AM with Rev. Jeffery Aiosa, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena.
