Cornwall police continue to investigate murder of 5-year-old Kahnawake Mohawk girl

The Cornwall Community Police Service has made an arrest in the alleged murder of a five-year-old girl at her home in the city of Cornwall.

Alissa Martin-Travers was found dead last Thursday morning after police were called to a Cumberland Street residence at 1:30 a.m.

“Obvious signs of trauma to the deceased person have led us to believe that a homicide has occurred and it is being investigated as such,” said Blake Paquin, CCPS spokesperson.

Later, police arrested a suspect in the murder. Shane Haley, age 20 of Cornwall, has been charged with murder and remains in custody.

No possible motive has been revealed and details of the murder are still heavily under investigation.

Cornwall and area residents set up a memorial for the victim near her home, placing toys and flowers along the sidewalk. The girl was buried in traditional Native clothing on Wednesday.
