The January and February winners for the Student Athletes of the Month have been selected for Salmon River Central School. The sponsors of these awards are the SR Hall of Fame and Quiznos. A male and female will be nominated by their coaches each month.
For January, our candidates are Tameka Thompson and Chris Lewis. Tameka was nominated by her hockey coach Jim Barnes. She played the position of goalie for the SRC Girls Hockey Team in the 2007-08 season as they once again became the Champions of the North for the 5th time. In ten games, Tameka had a total of 4 shutouts and only 6 goals scored against her. This Lady Shamrock became January’s selection when she had a 10-0 win record in nets for that month. Congratulations Tameka.
Chris Lewis is a Salmon River Hockey forward and has earned the honor to be SRC’s Student Athlete for January nominated by Tim Cook. Chris is a Senior and has been playing for 4 years. He is a tremendous young man both on and off the ice. Chris is a co-captain who excels not only in hockey but also in baseball and soccer at SRCS. Chris was also the Division 2 league leader in scoring for the second year in a row.
Over two weekends in January, Lewis lead the team in a 7-0 win over the state ranked New Hartford with three goals and 2 assists. The following weekend he scored 3 more goals in a 7-4 win against Bishop McQuaid of Rochester. In January, Chris collected 8 goals and 7 assists, he is undeniably a league, if not, a state MVP candidate. Chris is a member of the NYS Division 2 All State Team, Watertown Times All North, and Section 10 First Team All Northern last season. Congratulations Chris.
These two athletes were presented their awards by Sesi King, secretary of the SR Hall of Fame Committee.
There is a male and female also chosen for the month of February at SR. The Lady Shamrock chosen by coach Jim Barnes is Alley Bero. Alley is a third year captain for her hockey team and is an excellent role model in her sport. As a senior, Alley has lead the way in scoring in the 2007-08 season and in the previous year at SRCS. In the four years of high school, Alley has been selected to the First Team All Northern for hockey.
Besides scoring the winning goal this year in the Championship game, she was also chosen as the championship MVP and the D-2 league MVP. She is also busy outside of school with her talent, as she was recently selected to play in the inaugural game for the US Women’s Hockey Team. Congratulations.
For the month of February, Marc Plante was nominated by Coach Tim Cook for his sport of hockey at Salmon River Central School. Marc is a senior and is a co-captain for the “Rocks”. Marc saved his best hockey for last. In their last two games of the regular season, (vs. Massena and Alex Bay), Marc had 8 points (4 points and 4 assists) in a tie against the Red Raiders and a win against the Purple Ghosts that secured second place and a first round bye.
