A Voice from the Eastern Door
The North Franklin 5th & 6th grade girls basketball team finished a spectacular season on Saturday, March 15, winning their own tournament by defeating Malone in an exciting 36-31 championship game. This final win secured a perfect 20-0 season for the girls. Included in the long list of teams they defeated are Malone, Massena, Canton, Ogdensburg, Northeast Clinton, Northern Adirondack, Chateaugay, St. Lawrence and Brushton. Champions of every tournament they entered, the girls became known for their tough defense and fast-break style game.
Coached by Jocelyn Kelly and Tommy Smith, the team included Aliyah Cook, Antwona Domino, Taylor Francis, Enigoonse Jock, Abby Kelly, Karahkwiio Thompson, Jocelynn Martin, Jaiden Mitchell and Alyssa Smith.
Coach Kelly attributed the team’s success to the girls’ athleticism, tenacity and unselfish play. “This was a wonderful group of girls to coach. Not only were they very talented, but they also worked extremely hard and developed a great team chemistry” she said. “All of the girls worked together for the success of the team. That’s what makes great players and great teams. I’m very proud of them,” Kelly said, adding, “We are going to see some very big things from these girls in the years to come.”
