Buffalo Bisons U-12 Girls win states

A player with local roots helped her team win the New York State U-12 Girls State Hockey Championship. Alanna Herne, the daughter of Scott (Akwesasne) and Sonya Herne (Oneida of the Thames), currently of Tonawanda NY and granddaughter of Rita Swamp (Akwesasne) and Bobby Lazore (Akwesasne) participated in the championship tournament in Syracuse NY, March 1st weekend. The Bisons won their first game on a score of 8-0. Alanna scored one goal and had three assists. The second game proved more difficult as the Bisons were losing until the third period. They broke through for a four-goal surge and won the game 5-3. Alanna scored one goal to help her team win. The Bisons met their toughest opponent in game three and got beat handedly by the Rochester Edge 6-0. The Bisons finished as the second seed and faced the Rochester Edge again in the championship game later that same day. It was a different story the second time around. Alanna got the Bisons on the scoreboard first when she stole the puck from a Rochester defender and fired a wrist shot past the goaltender on the short side to take a 1-0 lead. The game ended with a 3-1 victory for the Bisons. The team will now travel to Philadelphia, PA to represent New York in the Tier 1 National Championships in April. The family is holding a 50/50 raffle to help Alanna and her family with travel expenses. Grandma Rita is also donating a crib quilt for the second prize drawing. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket or more please contact Rita 358-2543 or Marion Lazore 575-2393. Alanna’s family from Akwesasne is very proud of her most recent accomplishment. We wish her and the rest of the team the best of luck at the Nationals.
