Schools have fun with Dr. Seuss for national celebration

Students across the Salmon River Central School District and across America as well celebrated Read Across America Day on Monday. The national event is held on or around the birthday of the world’s most famous children’s author and poet: Dr. Seuss.

Throughout the day at both the Salmon River campus school and the St. Regis Mohawk School different celebrations were held. Starting right in the morning, the students ate green eggs and ham before making their way to their classroom to dress up in paper hats and red bow ties, imitating the Cat in the Hat.

Community members and student role models were invited to the schools to read books to the students. The selected readers included the Salmon River girls’ championship hockey team, female firefighter Sheila Adams, senior citizen Betty Kelly, Superintendent Jane Collins, St. Regis Mohawk Health Services representative Kim Russell, retired teacher Mrs. Black, CKON personality Reen Cook, artist and illustrator Dave Fadden, Nations Next Top Models Steevi King, Teioswathe Cook and Cheyenne Lazore, and many others.

In the afternoon at Salmon River the elementary school students ate a Dr. Seuss-themed cake donated by IGA.

Read Across America Day has been organized by the National Education Association every year, since 1997. The purpose is to “focus the country’s attention on how important it is to motivate children to read in addition to helping them master basic skills.”

The celebration corresponds with Dr. Seuss’ March 2nd birthday. His “use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be successful.”
